The Opportunity:
As a member of the Educational Support Services branch (Anglophone sector), you will foster and work within a variety of interdepartmental and intersectoral teams, as well as with school districts and schools, to create clear processes and resources for the intake and registration, welcoming, and cultural adjustment of newcomer students, K-12.

Using your knowledge of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, principles of culturally responsive pedagogy and intercultural competence, and what you learn from your relationships with ethnocultural communities, you will support the development of welcoming procedures across districts and schools in New Brunswick and organize professional learning opportunities for our educators.

Finally, building on your community relationships and understanding of pedagogy, you will provide departmental leadership for The Bridge, an intersectoral pathway for students in high school that are learning literacy and language at the same time.

The Role:
Reporting to the director of Educational Support Services, the successful candidate's responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and supporting the development of intake language assessments and providing resources, training, and supports.
  • Supporting the development and alignment of welcoming processes and other high-yield inclusive practices that systemically support our newcomer students.
  • Working in collaboration with EECD and district-based teams, in addition to community partners, other government departments and stakeholders, to build ethnocultural communities.
  • Expanding and regularly updating the Culturally Inclusive Book List.
  • Aligning and monitoring the work of the Welcome Centres and the consistency of the Welcoming procedures.
  • Collaborating with sectoral and departmental partners on the creation of a Welcome to New Brunswick Education website and the writing of a standard article series on Culturally Responsive School practices.
  • Organizing Culturally and Linguistically Inclusive Schools (CLIS) online course cohorts.
  • Organizing professional learning for teachers on cultural competency, intercultural relations, and intercultural competence.
  • Supporting the development and rollout of Capacity for Courage, a grant-providing and Professional Learning Community for educators.
  • Organizing and leading the Design Challenge for students, celebrating pride in cultural and linguistic diversity.
  • Support districts in onboarding and leading the work of a new position, Intercultural Support Workers.
  • Representing the Department of Education on various inter-departmental and regional committees.
  • Contributing to the development and the implementation of Department of Education initiatives.

Who you are:
You possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to think strategically and problem-solve complex situations. You are able to provide professional learning based on the needs of your audience and support change within and across systems.

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:

Need to have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and a minimum of six (6) years of experience working with multilingual language learners. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • TESOL/TESL or CELTA certificate.
  • The successful candidate must possess a thorough knowledge of research and evidence-based practice in Culturally and Linguistically Inclusive schools (CLIS).
  • Experience in cross-cultural community engagement. A proven understanding of how to provide culturally and linguistically inclusive environments.
  • Ability to assess and understand your own cultural identity and value base.
  • A proven ability to build relationships, including clear evidence of intercultural competence and communication skills.
  • Evidence of an understanding of how to use a trauma-invested lens with all tasks and activities.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.

Wage:
Pay Band 7: $86,112 - $104,182 annually.

Work environment:

  • Office location: 250 King Street, Fredericton.
  • A remote work agreement may be considered.
  • Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15-4:30.
  • Some travel throughout the province will be required.
