Shell Malaysia technical subsurface staff have been brought together to form a new Development Subsurface organization, referred to as One Subsurface. The integration of Shell’s technical subsurface capability into the One Subsurface, alongside Front End/Concept Engineering and key integrator roles, minimizes interfaces and maximizes joint accountability for delivery. This leads to clearer recognition of End-to-End aligned targets and key performance indicators and eliminates handovers. As a Geoscientist, you will be responsible for delivering integrated geological & geophysical evaluations, in collaboration with other disciplines in a natural project delivery team.

Shell Malaysia Upstream is a core country for Shell with both conventional and Deepwater assets that generate significant Free Cash Flow annually, supporting distributions and new investments in the transformation of Shell’s portfolio into the 2030s.
The Shell Malaysia Upstream portfolio consists of the following:
A number of Operated Gas and Oil Producing fields in the Sarawak Asset that supply gas into the MLNG onshore plant in Bintulu; substantial non Operated portfolio of oil & gas assets, the Gumusut-Kakap and Malikai deep-water oil fields in the Sabah Asset
We have a significant capex investment in the Growth Portfolio (MLNG, Timi, Jerun, Rosmari & Marjoram developments and various exploration opportunities) over the next 5 years.
We have secured multiple PSCs with significant exploration commitments focusing on Sabah ultra-Deepwater oil & gas portfolio, and Sarawak contaminated gas portfolio of opportunities to expand our heartland with large new hub development.
Shell Malaysia is actively pursuing energy transition agenda with CCS as one of the key enablers to Shell’s ambition of Carbon Net Zero. This present a unique opportunity where CCS business is potentially for development of contaminated gas exploration portfolio and servicing various local/international CCS customers.
The Malaysia Development and Subsurface team consists of around 180 Exploration and Development professionals that are focused on the safe execution and operation of our wells and assets, in delivering production gains through prudent Well Reservoir Facilities Management, and in delivering more than 50 new development & exploration wells over the next 5 years to enable future growth and sustain our business into the future.
The Exploration Geoscientist will report to the Geoscience Lead Foundation in Growth & Portfolio team in Shell Malaysia Development and Subsurface Organization.
You will be delivering evaluation work for value-driven opportunity generation exploration activities in the Malaysia Heartlands and beyond Ventures, with line of sight in Shell Malaysia Exploration organization.
The Growth & Portfolio’s multi-disciplinary team will work closely with the Business Opportunity Managers to grow material opportunities for the company.
THE ROLE
As an Exploration Geoscientist you will;
- Be an individual contributor within natural teams;
- Deliver exploration evaluations;
- Produce alternative success and failure case realisations that honour the data and supported by relevant analogues and exploration history;
- Will collaborate with other geoscience and discipline staff (e.g. geophysicists, specialist geologists, petroleum engineers), and with Volume to Value and commercial;
- Apply your skills beyond exploration projects when the natural team deliverables require you to do so;
- Specifically, as Exploration Geoscientist, Growth and Portfolio, you will:
- Generate new exploration opportunities from integrated Play Based Exploration-led evaluation of petroleum systems using basin- and regional-scale data; and support maturing leads into drill-worthy prospects and support delivering wells as required;
- Be deployed into natural teams to undertake predominantly opportunity generation and maturation projects in Malaysia Heartlands and beyond;
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
- Minimum 2 years of Exploration Geoscience experience from an Oil and Gas industry, Geologists, Geophysics, and Geoscientist professionals are encouraged to apply
- To be a geologist or geophysicist with previous exposure to subsurface evaluation / exploration experience;
- Please be explicit in your application about your background on either geology or geophysics skillset;
- Ideally you are skilled in at least one of the following: Play, Lead & Prospect Generation, Seismic Interpretation, Basin Screening & Regional Evaluation, New Business/Farm-in opportunities;
- To demonstrate flexibility: natural teams may be formed around specific deliverables or specific workflows in support of one or more ventures;
- “Cup half-full” mindset to evaluate and communicate a range of credible subsurface scenarios that can lead to new exploration opportunities. Comfortable to manage & communicate high subsurface uncertainty;
- Clear on intent: focus efforts on key risks & uncertainties that will inform the decision in hand;
- Willingness to learn new workflows;
- Early understanding of how to use multi-discipline and multi-source evaluations in support of the opportunities;
- Exhibits a learner mindset and leadership behaviours of maximising performance and living Shell values;
- Min of 2 years E&P industry experience preferred
